Pietro Tonolo

Tonolo, a Venetian in his early forties,
has become one of Italy’s best and maturest musicians, one who
possesses all the abilities required of a true leader. There are not
many Italian musicians who can claim to have played in New York in the
Gil Evans Orchestra and with Chet Baker, Dave Holland, John Surman,
Roswell Rudd and John Lewis. In Italy his memorable work includes
collaboration with Enrico Rava, Massimo Urbani and Franco D’Andrea
(and Arena), and of course the long period in which he was part of the
Giovanni Tommaso Quintet. More recently his work with Rita Marcotulli
has met with great acclaim, and among his latest recordings is a fine
trio album for the French Label Bleu with Henri Texier and Aldo
Romano. His Egea recordings are “Luna Park”, “Autunno” with Paolo
Birro, and “Retrò” with Bebo Ferra. Pietro Tonolo is a soldi musician,
one who does not try to impress with special effects and who is
blessed with fine phrasing and a beautiful sound. It is always a
pleasure to listen to him.
