UMBRIA JAZZ opens with a great performance of Miriam Makeba

Last night Umbria Jazz Festival 2002 started at Teatro Morlacchi with a great concert of Miriam Makeba within the gala performance organised by Associazione Nazionale Costruttori Edili. Her performance didn’t disappoint the critics and the huge number of spectators. Assisted by a group of young and good musicians and basically by a good ensamble of four vocalists Miriam Makeba gave signs of great vocal endowments. Thanks to a very powerful and accurate rhythm, the singer showed a long series of pieces of her past and late repertoire. There is a deep charm on the sound and on the melodies of the South-African traditions, the same heritage played by Miriam Makeba, which has fascinated the audience. At the end she got a big and thundering applause.

SEAN HARDOIN & ZYDEKOOL

It is certainly the jazz was born in New Orleans and its Jazz Festival is one of the most important in the world. That is why Umbria Jazz Festival keeps contact with its traditions. The most traditional music style <<par excellence>> from New Orleans is zydeco, a perfect mixture of Creole music and the evident French roots of Louisiana. This year the man of zydeco is SEAN HARDOIN and his band – ZYDEKOOL -. They were on the stage today at 1:00 p.m. at Giardini Carducci and Sean Hardoin met with the public’s approval playing a log series of melodies and a fanciful and exciting rhythmics.

LYLE HENDERSON AND EMMANUEL GOSPEL SINGERS

Everyday from 1:00 p.m. at Giardini Carducci and in Piazza IV Novembre there is al large number of very interesting concerts for free. Yesterday at 2:30 p.m on the stage of Giardini Carducci there were LYLE HENDERSON and EMMANUEL GOSPEL SINGERS. They payed tribute to gospel and its roots. The band starts from the origin of gospel traditions but they play on a contemporary and spirited way. Their electric and powerful rhythmics looks like the common funky blues.  Notwithstanding it was a terribly hot the audience appreciated very much their good traditional repertoire.
